Daily Connect: Metta Lessens Self-Criticism

The Wall Street Journal has an article this week on the latest research study about lovingkindness meditation.  Researchers studied participants of a seven-week LKM meditation program.  They report that:

Self-critical people were significantly kinder and more compassionate toward themselves after practicing lovingkindness meditation compared with a control group, according to a pilot study in Clinical Psychology & Psychotherapy.

Interestingly, the study suggested that practicing lovingkindness doesn't lessen self-hate, although that may mean that seven-weeks is too short a time to effect entrenched conditioning.

Every August, IDP commits to and supports Metta (aka Lovingkindess) meditation practice.

We'll support each other here at our blog, and on Facebook and Twitter.  And meditate together separately with the IDP Secular Buddhist group on the Insight Timer app, and write a Journal entry about your experience on our website.

Our Metta Month weekly courses An Introduction to Lovingkindness Meditation and Befriending Fear and Anxiety, are available in-person and via Home Study, and if you're in NYC, join us every Friday, 6-7pm, for our Metta Sitting Group
